MOUNTING:

Vertical mounting of the capacitor with the terminals up is recommended. However, horizontal mounting is acceptable providing the vent is located in the up position. Vertical mounting with the terminals down is not recommended because the capacitor life may be reduced and the operation of the pressure relief vent impaired.

SAFETY:

Because the watt–second value of these capacitors is high, precautions should be taken during the testing of these devices. Discharge resistors should be specified when there is a possibility of a residual charge left on the capacitor or to protect contacts. Mis–application, such as exceeding design limits or applying continuous AC voltage, may result in destruction or explosion of capacitors.

FAQ

How do I know when a capacitor is bad?

The air conditioner unit will not come on. Either the outdoor fan does not run, the compressor does not run, or both the fan and the compressor do not run. The breaker on the outdoor unit has been checked and reset, but the outdoor unit still does not come on. You can hear a little humming sound inside the unit which is the low voltage contactor humming. The capacitor may be swollen or even blown apart with capacitor oil.

How To Check

How to Check a Capacitor

1) Remove the start capacitor and use a screwdriver to shorten the two terminals and discharge the electricity from it.

2) Set your analog meter on 1k ohms.

3) Touch the two terminals with your ohms meter test leads.

4) Reverse the way that you were touching the two terminals with your ohms meter test leads.

5) The needle in your meter should swing to 0 ohms and swing back to infinity every time that you reverse the ohms meter test lead on the start capacitor.

6) If it does that, the start capacitor is good.

7) Set the meter. On a digital meter, set it to at least 1k ohms.

8) Touch the two terminals with your ohms meter test leads.

9) Reverse the way that you were touching the two terminals with your ohms meter test leads.

10) Notice that the meter will display some numbers for a second.

11) Then it will return to OL (open line). It should do this every time that you switch the ohms meter test leads position.

12) If it does this, the start capacitor is good.
